Remus, Jacques
Professional History From 1971 to 1974 he worked in Brest at CNEXO (IFREMER) as a researcher in marine ecology (thesis work) and as an aquaculture development engineer. In 1975 he left biology for music.
A saxophonist, he played in improvisation, jazz, and experimental troupes, notably the Free Jazz Unit, Lard Free, le Celestrial Communication Orchestra, On the Lam Street Band (Bread and Puppet), and Urban Sax (with whom he was an integral player from 1977 to 1982).
He was also involved in teaching from 1975 to 1980, with the GRM, and the Ensemble 2e2m. He founded the Musique en Herbe group, and taught at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Bourges.
From 1980 onwards he devoted himself progressively and then exclusively to composing and the conception of sculptures or musical 'machines'.
He has written for shows and film (Michel Caserta, Denis Pondruel, Abraham Segal (1995 to 1999), Stéphane Fievet) and coproduced shows for which he wrote the music (Aod-Konkhé 1982, Les Muses Bathymétriques 1984).
He has presented his musical machines in shows, exhibition-concerts, and performances, in particular Bombyx (1985), Le Double Quatuor A Cordes (1988), Concertomatique (1992), Cinq machines hexatonales, (1994), la "Roue Leonardo" (1995), le "Carillon des Zic-phones" (1998).
He has also developed interactive systems such as the "Camera Musicale" (virtual interface between gesture and music), and automated shows (Salons de Musique (1999) and Venice (2000) at the Musée des Arts Forain in Paris).
